With photography tuition and advice throughout the weekend.

There will be lots of photoshoots throughout the weekend. We keep the tour small, limited to 6 people so we can have a chance to have one on one tuition to show how beautifully simple it is to take better images with your smartphone, rangefinder or SLR camera.

Pip will offer advice on the fundamentals of photography, light and composition. Pip has over 22 years experience as a landscape photographer, and will be on hand throughout the weekend to advise and assess your photography. Even if just using a smartphone a little bit of time and thought to choosing, “that one sight from an inifinity of other sights” -Bresson, can go a long way to taking a well composed and executed image rather than a mere snapshot.

“The most important part of the camera sits 2 inches behind it”– Ansel Adams. Adams was one of the greatest landscape photographers of all time, with this point in mind we make it our mission to show you the client how to compose strong images with a smartphone, a film camera or digital SLR or rangefinder.

We want to make the most of the natural light which is minimal in January hence the early start to get out there.

We will be at liberty to stop on route wherever we fancy. This is the advantage of a small group of 7 person crew cab van, if we want to stop and take pics on route this can be easily done.

Glendalough is a beautiful Monastery with two lakes and woodland walks all set in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. More info here:

Sunday 19th 08.30: Breakfast and Powerscourt Waterfall

We start our day with an adventure to Powerscourt Waterfall. This is arguably the most photogenic waterfall in Ireland. Here I can teach how to slow down the exposure on your camera or with an app on the smartphone. This gives the effect of capturing the moving water to make it look like silk, capturing the dynamism of time in a still image.

This is the highest waterfall in Ireland, the real beauty here is within all the different small waterfalls that drop off the main one giving lots of beautiful micro waterfalls to add to the mix. More info here:

13.00 Lunch

We have a nice lunch break in Poppys Kitchen in Enniskerry. A wonderful little cafe serving yummy snacks and fine coffee.

Powerscourt Estate.

Powerscourt Estate. The gardens here are some of the finest in Ireland, in fact National Geographic voted Powerscourt to be third most beautiful gardens in the world! Even in Winter there is lots of magical images to be captured. This will give us a chance to apply macro close up photography to the flowers around us and to practice controlling the depth of field of the image, this is a term for the front to back sharpness of an image, whether you want a flower sharp with the background thrown out of focus or on the other side of the spectrum a long range of front to back sharpness, ideally suited for photographing the lake on the Estate. More info here:

16.00 Regroup @ the Avoca Terrace Cafe for coffee and a final discussion of our images of the weekend with some further advice on image taking before we depart. More info here:
